Record #170869:

Low latitude ice cores: contributions to paleoclimatology and understanding climate variability / L.G. Thompson.

Title: Low latitude ice cores: contributions to paleoclimatology and understanding climate variability / L.G. Thompson.
Author(s): Thompson, L. G.
Date: 2001.
Publisher: Sapporo, Japan: Hokkaido University
In: Proceedings of the international symposium on atmosphere-ocean-cryosphere interaction in the Sea of Okhotsk and the surrounding environment. (2001.),
Abstract: Condensed paper. Describes ice core studies forming part of long-term programme to acquire global-scale, high resolution climatic and environmental history to understand linkages between low and high latitudes. Compares two records from Tibetan Plateau: Guliya ice cap, (35° N, 6200 m asl) and Dasuopu Glacier in Chinese Himalaya (28° N, 7200 m asl), with two recent tropical records from Huascarán (Peru, 9° S, 6050 m asl) and Sajama (Bolivia, 18° S, 6550 m asl). Both tropical cores suggest significant cooling (~5°C) during Last Glacial Stage. Notes erasure of seasonal δ¹⁸O variations by meltwater percolation in shallow cores from Quelccaya ice cap (Peru) and discusses concomitant ice cap retreat.
