Abstract: Presents results of experimental investigation into capacity of Trematomus newnesi to detect and select food, with particular reference to chemo-sensory structures in the head region. Using amphipods as food, fish were stimulated visually, chemically or mechanically, or in paired combinations of these stimuli. Reactions were stimuli dependant, slightly lower in the afternoon, and more intense towards a moving prey. Amphipods Bovallia gigantea and Gondogeneia antarctica were well accepted, but Waldeckia obesa was systematically rejected, as were acid and sweet foods. First chemical sensation is thought to occur after stimulation of olfactory epithelium and possibly by isolated general chemo-sensory cells, which makes detection possible even without vision or mechano-reception. Selection of desirable food commences when prey comes into contact with lips, with various types of taste buds allowing rejection of food with inappropriate taste, even during Antarctic winter when darkness makes prey invisible for several weeks.
