Record #170814:
Drainage of ice-contact Miage lake (Mont Blanc massif, Italy) in September 2004 / Philip Deline, and 6 others.
Title: | Drainage of ice-contact Miage lake (Mont Blanc massif, Italy) in September 2004 / Philip Deline, and 6 others. |
Author(s): | Deline, Philip. |
Date: | 2003. |
In: | Geografia Fisica e Dinamica Quaternaria. (2003.), Vol. 27(2) (2003) |
Abstract: | Reports topographic survey and preliminary observations made immediately after drainage of ice-contact lake Miage in September 2004. Describes morphologies of lake bed and ice dam and recent evolution of lake, which has existed at least since 18th Century. Uses DEM to illustrate drainage event and constructs chronology. Concludes drainage occurred in two stages. Initial rapid water loss was due to increased outflow between glacier sole and till substrate. Lowering of lake surface left separate ponds isolated from subglacial drainage route and subsequent slower leakage took place over weeks through permeable till. Does not believe such events pose hazard. |
