The July 2003 Frébouge debris flows (Mont Blanc massif, Valley of Aosta, Italy): water pocket outburst flood and ice avalanche damming / Philip Deline, Marta Chiarle, Giovannni Mortara.

Title: The July 2003 Frébouge debris flows (Mont Blanc massif, Valley of Aosta, Italy): water pocket outburst flood and ice avalanche damming / Philip Deline, Marta Chiarle, Giovannni Mortara.
Author(s): Deline, Philip.
Chiarle, Marta.
Mortara, Giovannni.
Date: 2003.
In: Geografia Fisica e Dinamica Quaternaria. (2003.), Vol. 27(2) (2003)
Abstract: Describes July 2003 debris flows on large fan at foot of glacier de Frébouge (Val Ferret) and discusses possible mechanisms for debris flow initiation. Presents observations made before, during and after events in which around 30,000 m³ of coarse material were deposited. Presents evidence for and against water pocket outburst flood (WPOF) as trigger for first 17 July debris flow. Proposes three-step development of others: ice avalanching of part of glacier front; damming of proglacial torrent gorge by ice deposit; outburst flood due to dam collapse, with debris flow formation. Concludes strong post Little Ice Age retreat of glacier fronts in high mountain areas is generating new morphodynamic processes that may increase natural hazards such as WPOFs and ice avalanches.
