Abstract: | Describes use of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to survey snow water equivalent over vast areas and to study internal structure of snow cover. Reports calibration experiments in open space to determine noise level of 800 MHz system. Describes observations of winter snow cover in Hokkaido and Murodou-daira, Toyama prefecture. Finds GPR capable of detecting numerous thin ice layers within snow cover. Based on GPR measurements and analyses of snow survey data in Hokkaido, derives simple equations for various snow types using which snow water equivalent can be estimated from only GPR two-way travel time. |
