| Abstract: | Explores conventional photography as practical and inexpensive tool for estimating temporal and variations of surface albedo on glacier- and snow-covered mountainous areas. Technique involves georeferencing oblique photographs to digital elevation model and correcting reflectance values recorded by film or digital camera for topographic and atmospheric influences and effects of photographic process. Calibrates resulting geographically correct map of normalized reflectance values using surface of known albedo. Describes use of MODTRAN radiative transfer model to evaluate atmospheric transmittance, parametric solar irradiation model to estimate diffuse and direct irradiation, and georeferencing algorithm. Describes field validation on Mer de Glace, French Alps and discusses sources of error. |
