| Abstract: | Presents SEA LION algorithm for sea ice-concentration retrieval based on normalized brightness temperature polarization difference at 85 GHz. Corrects brightness temperature for weather influence using radiative transfer model and fields of atmospheric water vapour, cloud liquid water, and surface wind speed taken from weather prediction model and low-frequency SSM/I data. Describes basic equations relating total sea ice concentration to SSM/I data. Explains weather influence on sea ice and snow surface properties and correction of brightness temperatures for it. Presents tie-point error estimation, SEA LION algorithm and results for Antarctic (1992-99) and Greenland Sea (April 1999). Compares with results using COMISO-Bootstrap and NASA-Team algorithms and active microwave imagery. |
