| Abstract: | Presents data on concentrations of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons in waters near Comandante Ferraz and Henryk Arctowski stations, using surface sediment samples collected during austral summers 1990, 1992 and 1993, in order to determine baseline value and evaluate temporal and spatial distribution of natural and anthropogenic hydrocarbons. Values of total n-alkanes ranged from 0.14 to 5.48 μg.g⁻¹ and total concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons ranged from 0.47 up to 32.04 ng.g⁻¹. Highest levels were found near Brazilian and Polish stations, and though patterns of hydrocarbons found indicated mainly biogenic origin, there is some evidence of low level anthropogenic contribution. |
