| Abstract: | Outlines history of study of ebbs and flows with particular reference to work of Pierre Laplace and subsequent offer by Petersburg Academy of Sciences in 1831 of prize to any scientist who could solve mathematics of subject. As result, many scientists collected data on ebb and flow of tides, including those on Arctic Ocean. One outcome was creation of organisation for long-term observations in Russian America and White Sea by Fedor Petrovich Litke. |
