Record #170385:

Validation of sink rates of longlines measured using two different methods / B. Wienecke, G. Robertson.

Title: Validation of sink rates of longlines measured using two different methods / B. Wienecke, G. Robertson.
Author(s): Wienecke, B.
Robertson, G.
Date: 2004.
In: CCAMLR Science. (2004.), Vol. 11 (2004)
Abstract: Following requirement for vessels fishing for toothfish in Antarctic waters to achieve longline sink rates of 0.3 m.s⁻¹ to a depth of 15 m in order to mitigate seabird by-catch, compares sink rates of longlines as measured by time depth recorders (TDRs) and empty plastic bottles attached to longline by piece of string of known length. Discusses potential problems of either method, and importance of recording water-entry time of TDRs. Examines differences in sink rates to various target depths; and variation in sink rates of longlines over four depth increments with increasing distance from propeller-wash zone.
