Record #170172:

Basal ice from East Antarctica (EPICA) / R.D. (Reginald D.) Lorrain, S. Sleewaegen, Roland Souchez, J.-L. Tison.

Title: Basal ice from East Antarctica (EPICA) / R.D. (Reginald D.) Lorrain, S. Sleewaegen, Roland Souchez, J.-L. Tison.
Author(s): Lorrain, R. D.
Sleewaegen, S.
Souchez, Roland.
Tison, J. -L.
Date: 2003.
Publisher: Brussels, Belgian: Belgian Federal Public Planning Service Science Policy
In: Belgian scientific research programme on the Antarctic. Phase 4 (1997-2001). Scientific results, Volume II. Dynamics of the Southern Ocean and palaeoenvironmental records. (2003.),
Abstract: Discusses use of ice composition data in reconstruction of ice sheet behaviour, with particular reference to interactions between basal ice and glacier bed. Describes three case studies in areas where East Antarctic Ice Sheet interacts with water bodies, and evaluates results in context of interpretation of basal ice sequence at Dome C. Includes study of cold-based Suess Glacier flowing into Lake Popplewell in Dry Valleys of South Victoria Land, showing that transient wet-based conditions occurring as ice flows into unfrozen sediments of lake bottom create conditions favourable to entrainment of sediments and ice accretion by water freezing; study of ice formed at or near grounding line in Terra Nova Bay area, with description of double-diffusion freezing; and study of properties of ice at bottom of Vostok ice core formed by freezing of water from Lake Vostok, with reconstruction of mechanism of formation and discussion of interactions between sub-glacial lake and ice sheet.
