Abstract: This multidisciplinary investigation (WAIS) began as SeaRISE (Sea-level Response to Ice Sheet Evolution), and has now been re-named in order to clarify aims. Points out that west Antarctic ice sheet is largest marine ice sheet (i.e. grounded well below sea level) and appears to be undergoing rapid and dramatic changes in certain regions. Ultimate goal is to predict future behaviour and, in so doing, assess potential to collapse and raise sea level rapidly. To make prediction requires understanding of current state, history, internal dynamics, and mutual interactions within polar atmosphere--ocean--cryosphere--lithosphere environmental system and its coupling to global climate.
