Smooth muscle proteins as intracellular components of the chromatophores of the Antarctic fishes Pagothenia borchgrevinki and Trematomus bernacchii (Nototheniidae) / V.B. Meyer-Rochow, M. Royuela, B. Fraile, R. Paniagua.

Title: Smooth muscle proteins as intracellular components of the chromatophores of the Antarctic fishes Pagothenia borchgrevinki and Trematomus bernacchii (Nototheniidae) / V.B. Meyer-Rochow, M. Royuela, B. Fraile, R. Paniagua.

Date: 2001.
Abstract: Melanophores, xanthophores, and iridophores from skins of two Antarctic teleosts were tested immunocytochemically for presence of variety of muscle proteins. Actin, myosin and calmodulin were confirmed for all three chromatophore types. Caldesmon and calponin, both characteristic proteins of smooth muscle fibres, were also discovered. None of the chromatophores tested positive for troponin, showing that there is no close relationship between pigment cells and striated muscle. Lack of alpha-actinin in iridophores, but its presence in melanophores and xanthophores, is thought to be reflection of considerably greater pigment translocations within latter two types of chomatophore cells.
