In: Materialy Gli︠a︡t︠s︡iologicheskikh Issledovaniĭ. (2004.), Vol. 96 (2004)
Abstract: Extends earlier mathematical model and presents numerical simulations of hydrate formation from air bubble inclusions in firn pore close-off zone of polar ice. Focuses on modelling conversion of air-bubble ensemble to clathrate crystals as bubbles descend through transition zone. Motivated by new evidence from Dome Fuji core, introduces alternative to assumption that each bubble converts to one hydrate, allowing diffusion of air from bubbles and nucleation of hydrates in ice matrix. Describes fitting of model parameters and simulations of bubble and hydrate size distributions and gas composition in transition zones at Dome Fuji and Vostok, central East Antarctica. Compares alternative models of bubble-hydrate conversion, reporting new formulation improves fit to Dome Fuji observations.
