Abstract: | Studies sintering process and dielectric properties of samples made from stored snow or hoar frost in frequency and temperature ranges 50 Hz to 5 MHz and - 15°C to - 0.3°C. Relates increases of dielectric dispersion and low-frequency conductivity during sintering at -1°C to growth of inter-particle bonds. Reports dielectric relaxation time of snow samples at -10°C less than 1/10 that of ice. Suggests dielectric dispersion results reflect easier reorientation of water molecules near ice particle surfaces. Presents temperature dependences of relaxation time and conductivity at 100 Hz for new snow, compacted snow, faceted crystals and hoar frost. Concludes low-frequency conduction, reflecting d.c. conduction in snow samples, consists largely of surface conduction in ice particles and shows influence of quasi-liquid layer on ice particles above -6°C. |
