The geomorphologic features of snow block avalanche in Mt. Asakusa / Tatsuo Sekiguchi, Hideaki Marui, Kazuya Akiyama.

Title: The geomorphologic features of snow block avalanche in Mt. Asakusa / Tatsuo Sekiguchi, Hideaki Marui, Kazuya Akiyama.
Author(s): Sekiguchi, Tatsuo.
Marui, Hideaki.
Akiyama, Kazuya.
Date: 2003.
Language: Japanese.
In: Seppyo : Journal of the Japanese Society of Snow and Ice. (2003.), Vol. 65(4) (2003)
Abstract: Discusses snow block avalanches in area of Mt. Asakusa, Niigata Prefecture where one event killed four in 2000. Photographically identifies many local slopes with potential for or history of snow block avalanches. Starting mostly at knick line, these have slopes from 30 to 42 degrees and run-outs from 90 to 350 metres, values similar to those of past full-depth and surface layer avalanches. Reports many cracks and overhanging features on remaining snow surfaces, mostly at knick line and on high risk slopes. From geomorphological evidence such as avalanche furrows, and presence of eroded deposits in snow debris, suggests following scenario: 1) snow fall and accumulation; 2) (melting and) gliding of remaining snow and crack formation; 3) full-depth snow avalanche; 4) snow block avalanche. Concludes snow block avalanches play significant geomorphological role.
