Abstract: Examines nutrient dynamics in peat covered catchment during soil freezing period by measuring chemical properties of atmospheric deposition (bulk deposition and throughfall) and stream water at three ombrotrophic mires. Investigates soil freezing depth as one factor determining seasonal changes in stream water chemistry. Records increase in electrical conductivity and Na⁺, Cl⁻, Mg²⁺, SO₄²⁻, Ca²⁺ in throughfall after rain-free 25 days. Reports frozen layer in surface soil prevented infiltration of meltwater into peat soil during freezing season, with much salt accumulating on snow surface or within snowpack. First rain event during soil freezing season led to enrichment of stream water by salts accumulated in snow cover.
