Abstract: | Examines drag forces and coefficients and slope curvature effects for use in single equation integral models of snow avalanches. Describes experiments with up to 320,000 ping-pong balls on ski jump in Japan. Uses video measurements of avalanche front to test simple integral models with and without curvature. Examines scaling of basal friction and air drag coefficients. Finds single-equation model with velocity squared air drag and velocity independent basal friction describes data well. Effect of curvature is unimportant. Air drag coefficient is specified by inverse scale 1/L, where L scales as N¹/³, and N is number of balls. Basal friction coefficient is constant between experiments. |
