| Abstract: | Investigates polynya present in Storfjorden (Svalbard) during winter 1997/98. Analyses meteorological observations on nearby island of Hopen to determine dominant wind direction and speed. Describes numerical modelling based on two approaches: quasi-static equilibrium, characterized by time independence; and dynamic approach based on complex non-linear sea ice rheology. Presents polynya simulation results and quantitative assessments of size and geometry dependences on wind stress. Compares these to manual segmentation of ice cover using ERS-2 satellite SAR observations. Discusses sensitivity to wind force and model parameter variations. |
