| Abstract: | Describes monitoring of snow-cover dynamics in Tana river basin in northern Fennoscandia using SPOT VGT images. Uses algorithm based on Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI) developed for MODIS data. In absence of green band in SPOT VGT data, tests algorithm's performance and applicability to VGT images from snowmelt season using Landsat Thematic Mapper images. Also tests algorithm in partially snow-free conditions, finding estimated date of snow disappearance for each 1 x 1 km pixel largely consistent with local meteorological observations. |
