Record #169162:

Where on Earth is permafrost? Boundaries and transitions / Michael W. Smith, Dan W. Riseborough.

Title: Where on Earth is permafrost? Boundaries and transitions / Michael W. Smith, Dan W. Riseborough.
Author(s): Smith, Michael W.
Riseborough, Dan W.
Date: 2002.
Publisher: Dordrecht: Kluwer
In: Landscapes of transition : Landform assemblages and transformations in cold regions. (2002.),
Abstract: Analyzes climatic and environmental conditions that define limits and continuity of permafrost occurrence in Canada. Describes and applies TTOP model to analyse relationship between mean annual air temperature (MAAT) and mean annual ground temperature. Goes on to examine: climatic sensitivity of permafrost, maximum MAAT under which (discontinuous) permafrost can exist; whether permafrost at extreme southern margin is a contemporary feature or Neoglacial relict; and the limiting conditions for continuous permafrost. Concludes ground thermal conductivity ratio and snow cover are critical factors in determining, respectively, southern and northern limits of discontinuous permafrost.
