Record #168425:

Earth's Climate, past and future / William F. Ruddiman.

Title: Earth's Climate, past and future / William F. Ruddiman.
Author(s): Ruddiman, William F.
Date: 2001.
Publisher: New York; Basingstoke: WH Freeman
Abstract: Well illustrated and comprehensive undergraduate level text aims to make climate science appealing and accessible to science and non-science students. Covers Earth's climate over time scales from tectonic, orbital and glacial to historic and future. Adopts storytelling and hypothesis approach, revisiting key themes of causes that force climate change, natural response times of earth climate system components, interactions and feedbacks between these, and role of carbon in the climate system. Ice (glacial and sea) feature throughout, with sections on greenhouse/icehouse Earth, insolation control of ice sheets, Last Glacial Maximum, climate data from ice cores, measuring changes in ice sheet thickness, etc. Discusses interactions between human evolution and climate, examines climate changes current and predicted over next 100 to 1000 years and provides balanced presentation of greenhouse debate. Numerous references to further reading. Dedicated webpages contain all text art and useful links.
