In: Materialy Gli︠a︡t︠s︡iologicheskikh Issledovaniĭ. (2003.), Vol. 94 (2003)
Abstract: Presents mathematical model of hydrate formation from air bubble inclusions in firn pore close-off (transition) zone of polar ice. Focuses on modelling detailed evolution of air-bubble ensemble during its conversion to clathrate crystals. Develops computational systems and evaluates kinetic theory of air-hydrate nucleation on Antarctic ice core data. Assumes each bubble converts to one hydrate and total number of air inclusions in a particular volume of ice remains constant as it sinks through transition zone. Presents mathematical formulation including alternative kinetic models of air hydrate nucleation in bubbles, and testing of numerical solution schemes. Describes model validation on Vostok ice core data and application to Dome F. Compares model predictions with experimental histograms of bubble- and hydrate-size distributions in transition zones at Dome F and Vostok, central East Antarctica. Paper presented at Glaciological Symposium "Future of glaciosphere under changing climate", 17-21 May 2002, Pushchino.
