Abstract: Reconstructs interannual variability of accumulation rate and stable isotopic composition (δD) over last 200 years from snow sampled from deep (12 m) pits around Vostok station. Depth profiles show annual layer thickness, δD, gross beta-radioactivity and liquid conductivity of snow. Notes reference levels of 1965, 1955 and 1816. Average snow accumulation rate since 1955 is 2.15 ± 0.05 g/(cm²yr). Constructs time series of δD and accumulation rate, observing quasi periodical (about 50 year) variations possibly related to southern hemisphere changes in cyclonic activity. From regression of δD against surface air temperature observations for period 1958-1999 (11 per mil./°C) shows Vostok annual mean air temperature (currently -55.4°C) oscillated between -57 and -54°C during last 200 years. Increases of both δD and accumulation from minima around 1960 to maxima in 1970-1980, followed by persistent decrease, rule out simple connection between central Antarctic temperature, precipitation and global warming trend. Overall δD levels and accumulation have increased over 200 years, consistent other East Antarctic results. Paper presented at Glaciological Symposium "Future of glaciosphere under changing climate", 17-21 May 2002, Pushchino.
