Динамика субполярного оледенения за две тысячи лет по лихенометрическим данным

Title: Динамика субполярного оледенения за две тысячи лет по лихенометрическим данным
Title, transliterated: Dinamika subpoli︠a︡rnogo oledenenii︠a︡ za dve tysi︠a︡chi let po likhenometricheskim dannym / O.N. Solomina.
Translated title: Dynamics of subpolar glaciation in the last two thousand years from lichenometry data.
Author(s): Solomina, O. N.
Date: 2003.
Language: Russian.
In: Materialy Gli︠a︡t︠s︡iologicheskikh Issledovaniĭ. (2003.), Vol. 94 (2003)
Abstract: Analyzes lichen growth curves used to date glacial landforms in 18 (sub-)polar regions. Estimates reliability of lichenometric dates and recommends improvements. Critical point of many growth curves is period from few hundred to few thousand years, where control points absent. Technique remains useful in (sub-)polar climate in absence of alternatives. (Sub-)Antarctic regions require special attention because lichen growth rates are poorly studied. Presents moraine chronologies using lichenometry, ¹⁴C and tree ring dating, tephrochronology and historical data. Argues these show glacier variations of last millennium on two hemispheres are broadly similar. Distinguishes two waves of glacier activity within Little Ice Age (LIA); first starting 700-800 years ago, and second from 17th to beginning of 20th century. Maximum glacier extents in many Arctic regions occurred later than in temperate regions. Attributes Greenland and Franz Josef Land advances during Medieval warm period to precipitation anomalies. Reports evidence of glacier advances from first millennium AD sparse, probably because of subsequent disturbance by LIA advances.
