| Abstract: | Reports results from series of glaciological traverses in five drainage basins by Japanese Antarctic Research Expeditions (JAREs) since 1969. Maps show: surface elevation; surface mass balance; surface velocity from triangulation, Doppler satellite, and GPS surveys; and balance velocity field. Velocity varies from 10 m/a inland above 3000 m to 2.4-2.7 km/a at mouth of Shirase glacier. Presents bed and surface elevations, balance and observed velocities, and observed thickness changes along 250 km profile transverse to Shirase flow, 800 km profile from mouth of Shirase glacier to Dome Fuji, and 1000 km profile from Syowa station to Dome Fuji. Compares balance and observed velocities along several routes on Shirase glacier. Discusses observed and inferred thickness changes. Infers basal sliding below 1200 m elevation. |
