Abstract: Analyzes statistics of soil freezing and thawing on Tibetan plateau from 1981 to 1999. Uses data from 58 meteorological stations to present distribution maps of dates of first freezing and thawing and their variabilities. Soil freezes early in northeastern Qinghai province and source areas of Yellow river, and late in northern Himalayan slopes and southeastern and northeastern Tibet. Earliest freezing dates can vary by more than 50 days in some areas. Analyzes periodicities and trends, noting early freeze and late thaw in early 1980s, with overall trend towards later freeze and earlier thaw.
