Abstract: | Describes technique for determining thermal diffusivity and conductivity of ballast used in roadbed construction in cold regions. Uses 15 cm internal diameter plexiglass cylinder containing compacted ballast, with top plate to which cyclic temperature fluctuations are applied. Presents results using 12 hour cycle with specimens of embankment and revetment ballast of three particle size ranges. Using a grain size of 6 to 8 cm and temperature amplitudes ranging from 11.4 °C to 20.0 °C about means ranging from 0.0 °C to -0.5 °C, obtains values of diffusivity and conductivity via regression. Comparison with results for other grain sizes indicates both properties decrease with decreasing grain size. |
