Record #168333:

A suggestion to improve the chronology of quaternary glaciations in China / Yafeng Shi.

Title: A suggestion to improve the chronology of quaternary glaciations in China / Yafeng Shi.
Author(s): Shi, Yafeng.
Date: 2002.
Language: Chinese.
In: Journal of Glaciology and Geocryology. (2002.), Vol. 24(6) (2002)
Abstract: Uses recent discoveries to supplement chronology of Quaternary glaciations in China. Reports electron spin resonance (ESR) datings around 470 ka BP for moraines in headwaters of Bailang river in Qilian mountains and upper reaches of Ürümqi river in Tien Shan (Tianshan). Suggests these equivalent to MIS (Marine Isotope Stage) 12, which may correspond to Kansan-Mindel glacial period. Based on temperature calculated from Guliya ice core for MIS 3b of about 5°C lower than present, thermoluminescence and ESR datings of moraines at around 45 ka BP in Taiwan and Tien Shan (Tianshan) mountains, and glacier advances around world, concludes MIS 3b precipitation plentiful and favourable to glacier advance. From evidence of warm and humid Tibetan plateau climate and plentiful precipitation across whole of China, together with large area of transgression, with a high sea level only 8-10 m lower than present, concludes MIS 3a climate comparable with interglacial period.
