| Abstract: | Presents snow avalanche susceptibility map for municipality of Sölden, Austria. Uses GIS and probability based approach to include entire dataset of known avalanche occurrences in past 100 years and test all combinations of topographical (only) causal factors for usefulness in identifying past/potential avalanche release areas. Uses part of dataset to "train" model and part to test it. Describes selection of causal factors, such as slope, vegetation, etc., and theoretical basis of probability model. Present results for different time periods and combinations of causal factor layers. Identifies "slope angles + elevations + superficial deposits + vegetation" as best overall combination and presents final susceptibility map. Discusses model performance and proposes improvements. |
