Abstract: Reviews various approaches to problem and describes current degree-day model, which treats freezing of rain and refreezing of meltwater (assumed for glaciers with annual mean air temperature below 8°C). Presents input data and discusses uncertainties and their consequences. Describes parameter tuning until modelled altitudinal distribution of mass balance agrees with observations. Presents modelled sensitivities to 1°C temperature change for 61 glaciers, almost all in Northern Hemisphere, from Arctic to tropics. Sensitivities vary from -0.1 to -1.2 m water a⁻¹ deg ⁻¹. Examines effects of continentality and precipitation change. Finds good agreement between current results and those from Oerlemans using energy balance method for 12 glaciers common to both studies.
