Abstract: Presents geomorphological study and cartography of summit area of Gran Sasso d'Italia, which reaches 2912 m altitude in Apennines. Describes and illustrates area's geological and structural features and fluvio-glacial, glacial, cryogenic and other landforms. Describes past and present glacial processes of Ghiacciaio del Calderone, Europe's southernmost glacier and only one in central-Mediterranean area. Glacier is separated into upper and lower parts and is currently shrinking. Summarizes unusual climate, Mediterranean-type at lower altitudes, and Alpine-type higher up, that has allowed glacier to survive. Describes sources for geomorphological map, and techniques and representation scheme used to produce it.
