Collapse and rapid resumption of Atlantic meridional circulation linked to deglacial climatic changes / J.F. McManus, R. Francois, J.-M. Gherardi, L.D. Keigwin, S. Brown-Leger.

Title: Collapse and rapid resumption of Atlantic meridional circulation linked to deglacial climatic changes / J.F. McManus, R. Francois, J.-M. Gherardi, L.D. Keigwin, S. Brown-Leger.

Date: 2004.
In: Nature. (2004.), Vol. 428(6985) (2004)
Abstract: Reports measurements of ²³¹Pa/²³⁰Th, a kinematic proxy for meridional overturning circulation, in sediment core from subtropical North Atlantic Ocean. Explains how ratio depends on decay of Uranium isotopes, scavenging by settling particles and transport with ocean current. Discusses analysis and dating of core and compares ²³¹Pa/²³⁰Th record for last 20 kyr with proxy records of sea level, sea surface temperature from Greenland GISP2 ice core, etc. Finds meridional overturning nearly or completely eliminated during coldest interval in North Atlantic region, beginning with iceberg discharge Heinrich event H1, 17,590 yr ago. Finds similar but briefer event at time of Younger Dryas, 12,700 yr ago. Also reports rapid accelerations of overturning circulation concurrent with strong warming during deglaciation. Discusses possible mechanism for link to deglacial climate changes.
