Abstract: Concerns Chipewyan of northern Sasketchewan village "Mission" that author has known for 30 years. Author finds "what it means to be an Indian" a Western or even literary conceit of no interest to Indians themselves. He sees identity changing indeed, but vigorous, though of course with its costs. Factors for stability are land, hunting, egalitarianism, travel (from isolated homeland), body postures and ways of moving and using space; for change are modernisation, fashion, effective firearms, Christianity, move to villages, wage labour, increased use of English.
