Distribution of Alexandrium tamarense in Drake Passage and the threat of harmful algal blooms in the Antarctic Ocean / King-Chung Ho, Sung-Ho Kang, Ironside H.Y. Lam, I. John Hodgkiss.

In: Ocean and Polar Research. (2003.), Vol. 25(4) (2003)
Abstract: Describes appearance and toxicological characteristics of toxic dinoflaggelate Alexandrium tamarense isolated from Drake Passage in 2001. Highest concentrations of 20 cells L⁻¹ were recorded between southern tip of South America and Falkland Islands; waters near Polar Front contained 10-15 cells L⁻¹; while occurrence in waters near southern edge of Polar Front was rare, indicating that colder sea temperatures near Antarctic ice do not favour growth of dinoflaggelate. Laboratory culture of one strain of Alexandrium tamarense showed mainly C-2 algal toxins but very little saxitoxin and gonyautoxin. Discusses possible role of A. tamaranse in massive death of penguins in Falkland Islands in 2002-03 breeding season.
