Abstract: Reports work examining effects on Greenland ice sheet of various atmospheric CO₂ scenarios. Uses methods from third report of Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change to combine simple climate model with results of earlier ice sheet modelling. Tunes climate model to results of range of atmosphere-ocean general circulation models (AOGCMS). Notes earlier conclusion from modelling that warming greater than 2.7°C would largely eliminate Greenland ice sheet over roughly 1000 years. Reports 34 of 35 combinations of CO₂ emission scenario and AOGCM result produce greater than 2.7°C warming (24 of 35 when using summer, rather than average warming). Predicts inability of ice sheet to reform following removal, even under cooler pre-industrial climate conditions, because of reduced altitude and albedo of Greenland land surface.
