Record #167954:

Perennial water ice identified in the south polar cap of Mars / Jean-Pierre Bibring, and 13 others, including OMEGA team (41 members).

Title: Perennial water ice identified in the south polar cap of Mars / Jean-Pierre Bibring, and 13 others, including OMEGA team (41 members).
Author(s): Bibring, Jean-Pierre.
Date: 2004.
In: Nature. (2004.), Vol. 428(6983) (2004)
Abstract: Presents first direct identification and mapping of both carbon dioxide and water ice in Martian high southern latitudes, at 2 km resolution, during local summer when polar ice extent is minimal. Describes OMEGA imaging spectrometer on board ESA/Mars Express Orbiter and use for mapping. Interprets observed spectra from southern polar region to reveal extensive perennial water ice: as small admixture to carbon dioxide in bright regions; associated with dust, without carbon dioxide, at edges of bright cap; and, unexpectedly, in large areas tens of km away from bright cap. Compares results with surface morphology revealed by imagery from Mars Global Surveyor mission and discusses implications for understanding of Martian H₂O and CO₂ reservoirs.
