Abstract: Documents ice cliff retreat and sea-ice formation in Marian Cove, King George Island, Antarctica, and compares with atmospheric temperature record from Bellingshausen Station. Presents time-series for areal extent of ice cliff and ice sheet from topographic survey and aerial and satellite imagery. Shows dramatic retreat over period 1956-2001. Ice cliff has retreated 1050 m, at rate increasing from 6 m/yr to 81 m/yr, but advanced 21 m in 1987-88. Arctowski Icefield has also retreated. Shows sea ice freezing below -5°C and thawing above -3°C. Concludes patterns of ice cliff retreat and sea ice formation are related to air temperature changes, with recent retreat caused by autumn warming trends and expansion of summer thaw period.
