Abstract: Measures energy expenditure of macaroni penguins based on mass loss rates and respirometry at regular intervals during moult fast for group of seven female macaroni penguins captured at Bird Island, South Georgia during 1998-98 austral summer. Results suggest that average metabolic rate of female penguins during moult was not significantly different from that onshore during breeding season. Metabolic rate changed during moult fast as feather loss and increased vascularisation of skin caused increased heat production.
