Record #167892:

Overview of minke whale sightings surveys conducted on IWC/IDCR and SOWER Antarctic cruises from 1978/79 to 2000/01 / Koji Matsuoka, and six others.

Title: Overview of minke whale sightings surveys conducted on IWC/IDCR and SOWER Antarctic cruises from 1978/79 to 2000/01 / Koji Matsuoka, and six others.
Author(s): Matsuoka, Koji.
Date: 2003.
In: Journal of Cetacean Research and Management. (2003.), Vol. 5(2) (2003)
Abstract: Outlines most significant modifications that have occurred to research equipment, protocols and data collection during 23 years of minke whale assessment cruises in Antarctic regions. Includes guidelines for identification of minke whales; methods used for assessment of duplicate status in passing mode with independent observer; protocol used for conducting estimated angle and distance experiment; and methods used for determining southern boundary of research area (ice edge). Presents some preliminary results from ongoing third full set of circumpolar cruises indicating that abundance estimates will be appreciably lower than for earlier surveys. Evaluates possible effects of changes in protocol and data recording on population estimates.
