Abstract: Feelings of identity are shown, inter alia, by nationality ascribed to children of mixed descent. Anecdotes describe persistent beliefs in "Lord of Place", and power of shaman over vehicle problems. Nanay are extremely tactful but stubborn in dealings with outsiders. They and Ul'chi are very tenacious of their traditions and way of life and clothes that identify them.
