Record #167814:

Hvis der ikke findes renhyrder vil folket dø / Jukka Pennanen.

Title: Hvis der ikke findes renhyrder vil folket dø / Jukka Pennanen.
Translated title: If there are no reindeer herders, the people will disappear.
Author(s): Pennanen, Jukka.
Date: 2002.
Publisher: Copenhagen: Infonor
Language: Danish.
In: Tundraens og tajgaens folk. (2002.),
Abstract: Describes how northern Kola Peninsula's reindeer herders' ethnicity - Saami, Komi and Nentsy - has changed during 20th Cent. Cultural symbols include laavo/chum or stone houses, clothing, lassos, knives, sleds and food, introduced into one group from another, or at least modifying existing type, often from Komi to Saami. Komi social hierarchy was also stronger than that of Saami. Resulting loss of self-respect and drunkennness led many Saami women to prefer to marry Komi. Describes gatherings that consolidate ethnicity and help Saami get from Fennoscandia. Despite near loss of language, and low status from being employed initially as herders, Nentsy hold together best.
