| Abstract: | Compares salinities along transect (50° S to 60° N) through western basins of Atlantic ocean between 1950s and 1990s. Transect chosen to span maxima and minima of evaporation minus precipitation (E-P) in both hemispheres. Present differences in salinity between periods 1985-99 and 1955-69 as functions of density and depth. Finds systematic freshening at both poleward ends contrasted with large salinity increases pervading upper water column at lower latitudes. Provides detailed discussion of changes, including freshening of Labrador Sea, Northeast Atlantic Deep, Denmark Straight Overflow, Antarctic Intermediate and Upper Circumpolar Deep Waters. Discusses role of recent amplification of North Atlantic Oscillation (in atmospheric pressure). Suggests shifts in oceanic distribution of fresh and saline water are occurring worldwide and linked to global warming and possible changes in Earth's hydrologic cycle. |
