Abstract: News feature on Greenland ice sheet prompted by modelling work by Phillipe Huybrechts, who examined response to climate warming (in third report of Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC)). Also reports simulations showing inability of ice sheet to reform following removal, even under cooler pre-industrial climate conditions. Reports other work showing steepening of ice sheet margins as a result of increased melting, and thinning of fast flowing outlet glaciers. Outlines difficulties of predicting ice sheet behaviour.
