Abstract: Examines three methods of mapping snow cover and calculating snow cover area in northwest China; supervised classification(SC), digital number (DN) statistics, and Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI). Uses data from Landsat TM, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and NOAA/AVHRR to show that best method for obtaining snow index is different for each data source. Recommends use of reflectivity threshold statistics (RTs) for incomplete data series. Introduces brightness compensation method for decreasing impact of topographic shading on distinguishing of snow pixels.
