Abstract: Investigates interaction of microwaves with snow cover to aid selection of optimal configuration for snow cover mapping of ENVISAT Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR). Reports analysis of incidence angle dependencies of multipolarization backscattering coefficient from mountainous area covered with dry snow, wet snow and bare ground. Results are derived from C- and L-band airborne fully polarimetric SAR data, combined with ERS SAR and in situ data. Describes sources of data from Kongsfellet area, Norway collected during 1995 European Multi-sensor Airborne Campaign (EMAC'95). Finds discrimination between bare ground and wet snow best for high incidence angle. Finds cross-polarization components below ASAR noise floor for both bare ground and wet snow.
