| Abstract: | Investigates formation and expansion mechanisms of moraine-dammed glacier lakes in Lunana region of Bhutan Himalayas. Study is motivated by potential for glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in region. Reports hydrological observations and bathymetry of glacial lake Lugge Tsho on debris-covered Lugge glacier, observations of surface topography, mass balance and flow of Lugge glacier and Thorthormi glacier (also debris covered), and observations from 50 cm deep pit and 6 m ice core on debris-free Ganju La glacier. Reports Lugge Tsho up to 126 m deep. Presents meteorological data from Lugge glacier, observations of rock surface and moraine temperatures (to explore potential for freeze-thaw release of debris to trigger GLOF), pit stratigraphy and preliminary biomass analysis from Ganju La glacier. |
