| Abstract: | Aims to assess possibility of glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) from Chubda Tsho in Bhutan Himalayas. Examines variation in Chubda Tsho and Chubda Glacier during last 35 years from satellite data and field observations made in 2002. Describes research area and use of CORONA satellite photographs from 1967/68 and SPOT satellite images from 1991/2001 in stereoscopic views. Finds location of glacier front is unchanged, but surface elevation of debris-covered part of glacier has dropped. Lake area expanded threefold from 1967 to 2001. Believes features of lower glacier gravitationally stable, but notes collapse scars and unknown potential for rocks and glacier ice to trigger GLOF. |
