Abstract: Investigates effects of evaporation and percolation of rainwater on melting of debris covered glaciers. Reports observations from Lirung Glacier, in Langtang Valley of Nepal Himalayas. Notes heavy rainfall during summer melt season. Uses lysimeter to infer evaporation from surface of debris covered ablation area, where surface temperatures reach 20°C in monsoon season, and from nearby non-glacier area. Analyses meteorological data and fluctuations in rainfall and evaporation over 46 days. Finds 25% of rainfall evaporates from debris covered surface. Neglect of associated heat flux would result in 100% overestimation of melt beneath debris. Heat flux with percolated water has no effect on melting of ice under debris. Discusses differences in evaporation from debris and non-glacier surfaces.
