Record #167675:

Le risque avalancheux en Islande / Armelle Decaulne.

Title: Le risque avalancheux en Islande / Armelle Decaulne.
Translated title: Snow avalanche hazard in Iceland.
Author(s): Decaulne, Armelle.
Date: 2004.
Language: French.
In: Géographies : Bulletin de l'Association de Géographes Français. (2004.), Vol. 81(1) (2004)
Abstract: Notes presence of steep slopes, abundant snowfall and weak and unstable snow mantle as main contributors to snow avalanche release in Iceland. Examines records of avalanche release since AD 870, noting main hazard areas in fjords of north-western, northern and eastern coasts. Examines evolution of resulting loss of life and habitat over time, noting avalanche risk is exacerbated in 20th Century as land use changes. Old inland farms are abandoned for coastal villages and become less populated in winter. Villages in fjords have expanded and avalanche associated loss has increased. Describes increasing use of avalanche impact reduction using tunnels, barriers, etc.
